JobPay, content design for a mobile app
Helping business owners and freelancers collaborate effectively

Challenge: Getting a preliminary mockup ready for final design review
The challenge required a content designer to improve the overall functionality and usability of the mobile experience for two target personas, taking into account their different needs and goals.
Project
A UXCC assignment to improve the functionality and usability of a mobile project management and payments app.
Scope
-
Background research and personas
-
Style guide ideation and creation
-
Content design for distinct user personas and experiences
-
Marketing assets
Phase 1: User research and personas
My teammate in user research discovered two target personas for the project, a freelancer and a business owner.
With this data, I began my own research to start building out the product voice.
I searched online for terms that these users would use to work together, keeping in mind their different perspectives and needs while using the app.

After hosting internal sessions with cross-functional stakeholders, I created a voice and tone document that eventually became the style guide.
Phase 2: Demonstrating voice and style in mockup designs
The design team sent over the first draft of mockups in Figma and I was ready to apply all the voice and style we envisioned into a user-ready MVP.

Onboarding flow

My task for onboarding was to emphasize the app's main benefits for both types of users, and offer a clear, consistent way to log in or sign up.
I kept the voice principles I had recently established (professional, welcoming, informative) top of mind.
Freelancer flow

From this point forward, the design becomes a lot more strategic as the functionality increases in complexity.
Aside from simply changing and cleaning up the language, there are multiple conversations I had with design, product, engineering, and legal throughout the flows to help improve the experience.
For example, I suggested new error messages, microcopy, legal text, hint text, new fields, new screens, confirmation dialogues, and interactions to ensure maximum clarity before usability testing.
Results
UXCC determined that the mockups were “user-ready,” with compliments to my ux writing work: specifically short, actionable CTAs, creating helpful tooltips and microcopy, suggesting excellent confirmation dialogues, visual improvements, and collaboration by explaining my recommendations and thought processes.
